Diesel exhaust from heavy-duty diesel vehicles (HDDVs) has serious health implications. However, there is no denying that they play a major role in commercial transportation. HDDVs are diesel engine powered vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) exceeding 8,500 pounds.
DEC has come up with a program to ensure that the emission control systems of HDDVs are well maintained. The two types of emission inspection programs for HDDVs developed by DEC are:
- An annual emission inspection program for HDDVs registered in the New York City Metropolitan Area (Long Island, Westchester, New York City, and Rockland Counties)
- A roadside emission inspection program for HDDVs (operating on New York State roadways)
Both these tests are conducted by a certified inspector. Though authorized emergency vehicles exceed 8,500 pounds, they are exempted from this inspection program. Emission inspections include:
- A visual inspection to verify the functioning of the vehicle's emissions control equipment
- A check for tampering and an opacity (smoke) test using an approved opacity meter
